How to Build an OCM Practice (3 part series)

Change Management is probably the fastest growing discipline in corporate America today. Companies and executives alike are recognizing the impact of people readiness when it comes to launching projects or making significant organizational changes in achieving target ROI. In fact, I’ve heard it said that the next “C-level” position will likely be the CCMO – Chief Change Management Officer.

That’s all great news for both corporate America, as well as those of us who have a passion for Change Management work. Over the past two and a half years, I’ve built a thriving OCM practice with Perficient, a leading IT and management consulting firm, and I’ve learned a lot in the process. Whether you are building a practice for a consulting firm or within “industry,” I believe the things I’ve learned will help.

There are many factors required to build a successful practice, and I’ll focus on what I consider to be the three most important in this series:

  1. Over perform one project at a time
  2. Get the right people
  3. Evangelize, evangelize, evangelize

As you build your practice, there will be obstacles, successes, and failures along the way. How you adapt and take advantage of these will make all the difference. At the root of it all, these three foundational elements are core to success, and getting them right will set you off on the right trajectory and allow you to sustain your efforts in the midst of challenges that will surely come your way.
